The Miami native’s clutch extra-inning double powered Pensacola to victory, marking a breakout performance for the former first-round pick recently reunited with executive Peter Bendix.
It took a while but Adrian Santana earned his big moment as a Miami Marlins prospect.
The Miami native hit an RBI double on a line drive to right field for the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to push Double-A Pensacola past Montgomery 5-4 on Thursday. It was the icing on the cake that was his 3-for-5 night for the Blue Wahoos, who lead the Southern League South in the second half of the season.
Back when Peter Bendix was the general manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, he selected Santana with the 31st overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school in Miami. Santana showed off his speed early when he stole 51 bases for Single-A Charlotte in 2024.
Three years into his current tenure as the president of baseball operations for the Miami Marlins, Bendix acquired him along with two other prospects in a trade with the Rays for Liam Hicks. Santana was batting .316 with 23 stolen bases in High-A Bowling Green before being traded. He entered Thursday batting practice at .282 in 17 games in Double-A.
The Biscuits started the game with a 2-0 lead on a single by Cooper Kinney in the first inning and a double by Will Simpson in the third inning.
The Blue Wahoos struck back to take a 3-2 lead off the bat of Fenwick Trimble. He hit a single in the fourth inning to put Pensacola on the board and then singled again for two runs in the sixth inning.
Mac Horvath singled in the sixth inning to put Montgomery back up 4-3 but Pensacola later tied the game again on a single by Juan Matheus in the eighth inning to eventually force extra innings.
Triple-A
Triple-A Jacksonville rallied for five runs in the fourth inning to defeat Nashville 10-8 on Thursday at home.
The Sounds struck first with a solo home run by Blake Burke. The Jumbo Shrimp tied the game 1-1 off an error in the third inning.
Brendan Jones sparked the fourth-inning rally with a three-run home run, his first since being promoted to Triple-A. Brayden Taylor hit an RBI triple and Deyvison De Los Santos singled to put the Jumbo Shrimp up 6-1.
After Akil Baddoo hit an RBI single, Jefferson Quero tied the game 6-6 with a three-run homer, his 13th of the season, in the sixth inning.
Kemp Alderman singled on a line drive to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. After the Sounds tied it once again in the seventh inning, Cam Cannarella hit an RBI double to spark a three-run rally to take the lead for good. Graham Pauley and Alderman followed it up with RBI singles of their own.
Jace Beck threw five innings allowing only one run on two hits with seven strikeouts for the Jumbo Shrimp.
High-A
The Beloit Sky Carp dominated the Quad Cities River Bandits 11-5 on Thursday. Dillon Head went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Cody Schrier went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and his 15th home run of the season to lead the Sky Carp at the plate. He was a triple away from the cycle.
Chase Jaworsky and Carter Johnston each drove in two runs for the Sky Carp, who lead their division in the second half of the Midwest League Season.
Single-A
The Jupiter Hammerheads fell to the Tampa Tarpons 8-3 but that didn’t stop one Marlins prospect from stealing the show.
Luis Arana drove in a run on a single in the eighth inning and later scored another run by stealing home plate. It was his 38th stolen base of the season, 24th of which came with the Hammerheads.
