The Arizona State standout powered a dominant Jacksonville victory, continuing a meteoric 34-homer rise through the system while headlining a night of high-octane Marlins prospect performances.
Miami Marlins No. 13 prospect Brandon Compton homered in his first Triple-A games to help the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (67-65) defeat the Norfolk Tides 8-4 on Wednesday.
Compton went 2-for-4 including his solo dinger over the right field wall in the fifth inning. The Arizona State grad arrives to Jacksonville after leading the Double-A Pensacola offense with 21 home runs and 54 RBIs, while batting .332 with a 1.180 OPS in 50 games.
The Marlins drafted Compton with the 46th overall pick in 2025. Through college and early in the minor leagues, he demonstrated lefty power with raw strength. After hitting only two home runs last summer in High-A Beloit, he broke out with 34 home runs over three levels in 112 games this season.
Marlins No. 6 prospect Cam Cannarella, who also went through three different minor leagues levels, hit his 14th home run of the season. Bennett Hostetler also homered while driving in five RBIs for the Jumbo Shrimp. Juan Matheus drove in a run in his Triple-A debut.
Jacksonville LHP Luis Palacios, RHP Zach Brzykcy, RHP Zach Pop (W, 3-4) and LHP Christian MacLeod combined to hold Norfolk hitless through the first 7.0 innings while issuing one walk and six strikeouts.
Double-A Pensacola
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos fell 10-1 to the Columbus Clingstones on Wednesday but maintains a 5.5 game lead for the second-half Southern League South division lead.
Marlins’ No. 11 prospect, center fielder Dillon Lewis, went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the first-inning. Marlins No. 2 prospect Aiva Arquette also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
With 10 games remaining in the season, the Blue Wahoos can secure the second-half division title by avoiding being swept by Columbus. The Blue Wahoos would face Biloxi in a best-of-three Southern League Division Series beginning Sept. 15.
High-A Beloit
The Beloit Sky Carp fell 4-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday, as their three-run comeback attempt fell short. Chase Jaworsky went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer, two walks and three RBIs. Victor Ortega went 2-for-3 with a double and is batting .360 since joining the Sky Carp. Left-hander Brayan Mendoza took the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.
Single-A Jupiter
The Jupiter Hammerheads were defeated by the St. Lucie Mets on a 6-5 walk-off loss on Wednesday. Echedry Vargas went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Vargas leads the Hammerheads with 27 homer runs. Vargas was named the Florida State League Player of the Month after slashing .386/.436/.867 with seven doubles, 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. Wessley Roberson hit a double and has scored a run in each of his first three games with the Hammerheads.
