Brendan Jones flirts with the cycle and flashes elite speed, while Colby Shade homers in his debut to fuel the Blue Wahoos' dominant doubleheader sweep over Columbus.
Miami Marlins No. 17 prospect Brendan Jones nearly completed a cycle in leading Double-A Pensacola to sweep the doubleheader against the Columbus Clingstones on Thursday.
Colby Shade made his Double-A debut and hit a solo home run during the Blue Wahoos’ 1-0 win in the nightcap. Since moving up to Double-A himself, Brandon Compton is slashing .339/.406/.790 in 62 at-bats to help improve the Blue Wahoos to 13-10 in the second half of the Southern League season.
Jones homered and stole his 33rd base of the season, which leads the team. The 24-year-old is threatening to top his 51-stolen base season last year when he was a New York Yankees prospect.
Jones was a key part of the trade package that sent Ryan Weathers from Miami to the New York Yankees. The Yankees drafted Jones in the 12th round out of Kansas State in 2024 after leading the Big 12 in walks (55) and stolen bases (40) while being one of the conference’s premier defenders.
