The Jupiter Hammerheads sit one win away from Florida State League glory, while the Blue Wahoos prepare for postseason action behind a wave of surging power prospects.
Much like Triple-A Jacksonville last year, the Miami Marlins are on the verge of having a minor league affiliate take home a championship for the second straight season.
After a dominating 9-1 win against the Tampa Tarpons on Sunday, the Single-A Jupiter Hammerheads are one win away from winning the Florida State League championship. The Hammerheads will be home for Games 2 and 3 of the championship series.
It was a scoreless game until the seventh inning. Luis Arana hit an RBI double and later scored on a balk to put the Hammerheads up 2-0.
The Tarpons responded in the eighth inning after a solo home run by Luis Escudero on a line drive to right field.
The Hammerheads poured it on in the ninth inning. Jacob Lombard drove in a run on a single and Eric Guevara followed it up with a two-run knock. Andres Valor and Carlos Sanchez walked with the Bases loaded and Varges drove in two more runs on a single.
Lombard, who was drafted in July, has driven in a run in every playoff game for the Hammerheads this season.
Luis Arana reached on a fielder's choice that led to the final run scoring.
Jake Clemente threw 5.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the Hammerheads.
Pensacola in Playoffs
Dillon Lewis hit his 18th home run of the Double-A season in the Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ regular season finale on Sunday, a 2-1 loss against Biloxi. Lewis, who was a key part of a prospect package that sent Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees over the offseason, slashed .242/.302/.460 with 20 stolen bases and 48 RBI in 89 Double-A games.
After securing the second-half division title, the Blue Wahoos will face the Shuckers in the playoffs on Tuesday. Along with Lewis, the Blue Wahoos were led by Fenwick Trimble, who batted .263 with an .809 OPS, 15 home runs, 49 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 84 games.
Triple-A season closing
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp have one more series before the end of the Triple-A season. The Jumbo Shrimp travel to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. The Jumbo Shrimp enter the final series even at 71-17. While returning to the playoffs seems out of the question, they can still finish the year on a high note and above .500.
Matt Etzel leads the current roster with 19 home runs, followed by Kemp Alderman with 18. Brandon Compton, who started the year in High-A Beloit, currently has 35 home runs and 97 RBI, leading all Marlins minor leaguers.
