As the Jumbo Shrimp battle to break their slide, elite prospects like Cam Cannarella and Kemp Alderman aim to ignite a turnaround for Miami’s talent-rich farm system.
One day after the Miami Marlins snapped their historic 12-game losing streak, their Triple-A affiliate will look to do the same on Tuesday.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are coming off two straight series sweeps, amounting to a 12-game losing streak of their own. They open a six-game home series against the Memphis Redbirds with hopes of turning their fortunes around. The Jumbo Shrimp are 9-3 against the Redbirds this season, including 5-1 at home.
Their losing streak has Jacksonville (8-15) in the bottom of the second half International League East standings, 10.5 games out of first place.
Jacksonville will send RHP Brandon White (3-4, 5.74) to the mound for Tuesday’s series opener at Vystar Ballpark. White earned Next Wave Pitcher of the Month honors for June, but has struggled so far in Triple-A with a 5.74 ERA.
Prospect Watch
No. 4 prospect RHP Karson Milbrandt leads the Marlins’ farm system with a 3.35 ERA, mostly from his work carving up Double-A hitters at the start of the season. Milbrandt represented the Marlins in the Arizona Fall League last year and the All-Star Futures Game this summer.
No. 6 prospect OF Cam Cannarella leads the organization with a .353 batting average, .585 slugging percentage and 1.027 OPS, this season. Cannarella started the season in High-A Beloit and moved up the organizational ladder through Double-A to Triple-A.
No. 7 prospect OF Kemp Alderman leads Triple-A Jacksonville with a .289 batting average, 14 home runs, a .498 slugging percentage and .864 OPS.
No. 10 prospect OF Brandon Compton leads Marlins minor leaguers in home runs (23), RBI (65) and walks (75). He has hit 11 home runs since joining the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on June 30, which leads all of Double-A. The Blue Wahoos take on the Smokies in Tennessee with a 15-11 second-half record and 1.2 games out of first place in the Southern League South Division.
No. 19 prospect LHP Nate Payne leads Marlins minor leaguers with 113 strikeouts on the year, which is the seventh across MiLB. Led by him on the mound and No. 24 prospect OF Dillon Head (.364/.432/.621 in July) at the plate, High-A Beloit reigns supreme in the second half with a 20-10 record. The Sky Carp look to maintain their Midwest League South lead on Tuesday, as they open a series with the West Michigan Whitecaps.
No. 14 prospect OF Luis Cova leads Single-A Jupiter to a six-game home series against Clearwater with a 16-game on-base streak. No. 15 prospect Max Williams was activated from the 60-day injured list on July 9 and has since slashed .390/.519/.585 with a 10-game hitting streak.
