Six Miami Marlins players will represent their countries in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
2022 Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantra will be representing the Dominican Republic, as will catcher Augustin Ramirez.
Infielder Otto Lopez, catcher Liam Hicks, and outfield Owen Caissie — who the team recently acquired from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for pitcher Edward Cabrera — will all represent Canada.
Utility infielder Yiddi Cappe will represent Cuba.
Of the six Marlins in the WBC, Caissie will probably be the one people are most excited about.
For one, Caissie is a new Fish, having been acquired less than a week ago.
Caissie is also one of the top prospects in the Marlins system, ranked No. 4, which is ahead of any Miami hitting prospect aside from 2025 first-round draft pick Aiva Arquette.
The difference between Caissie and Arquette is that Caissie has played in the majors before (26 AB with the Cubs in 2025) and is expected to be back in the bigs soon.
The WBC will be the first chance for Marlins fans to see what Caissie can do against big-league competition.
Team president Peter Bendix spoke highly of Caissie at a recent media availability, noting that Caissie’s ability to hit with power is a big reason the team acquired him.
“It’s a hard thing to find in any area,” Bendix said. "It's usually very expensive to acquire, and I think every good team needs power. With him, we're getting someone who has shown the ability to make adjustments as he's gotten older and as he's faced better pitching.”
Caissie has been to the WBC before.
In 2023, Caissie made Team Canada when he was just 20 years old, played in three games, and showcased his power by hitting a home run against Great Britain.
But that was before Caissie became a Marlin, so now Miami baseball fans will watch with greater interest.
"I think that's going to be a great experience for him," Bendix said. “I think the more high-level competition he and all of our young guys can get, the better it is for them and for us."
The WBC is scheduled to run March 5-17.
