The young lefthanded hitter has great speed and solid defensive skills in the outfield

The Miami Marlins have so many prospects that it may be hard for them to find spots for all their players; names like versatile outfielder Brendan Jones could get lost in the mix - despite a toolbox full of talent.

Jones, a former 12th-round selection of the New York Yankees in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft after a standout career at Kansas State University, was acquired in the David Weathers trade as part of a The 24-year-old is a lefthanded swinger at the dish and packs a little bit of blaze in this bat. But the overall picture, the combination of factors, is what has coaches and scouts so impressed by what he brings to the table. It's enough to make him a valuable piece of any team, even though that might ultimately might not happen in Miami.

Still, the evaluation provided for Jones is hard to ignore. He's clearly got enough to be a MLB-caliber player sometime soon.

"Jones holds his hands high and maneuvers his barrel around the zone to make frequent contact on all pitch shapes," his official MLB scouting analysis reads. "He controls the zone well and rarely chases, taking pride in getting on base."

"Not only does Jones possess impact speed, but he's also highly efficient and isn't afraid to take an extra base. He's similarly an intellectual defender in center field -- and a quality defender in the outfield corners -- with a good sense of how to position himself and average arm strength. Jones is a high-character player who gets high marks for his motor."

Where Does Jones Stand?

This season with the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Jones hit just .231, but had solid slugging numbers, with 14 home runs and 48 RBI in just 381 at-bats. Most importantly, he had 48 stolen bases. He has 117 career steals in three professional seasons. On top of it all, he's an adept outfielder who can play all positions due to his baseball knowledge.

As mentioned in his scouting report, Jones is known as a high-intellect player. Those baseball smarts will carry him a long way. He projects to be a fourth outfielder and valuable role player when he reaches the big league level. And the youngster will likely get some big league plate appearances in 2027 - depending on where the team is at in terms of the standings or injury status.

Again, there's a lot there to like. But the Marlins' current farm system is overflowing, and their player development mechanism is churning out star-caliber big leaguers like Joe Mack and Griffin Conine. With a bevy of baseballers bunched up ahead of him, will Jones be able to squeeze his way onto the Marlins roster permanently.

Odds are, he could get lost in the shuffle, due to several other prospects who will eventually shift into full-time or part-time roles in the outfield. His skill set is above average, but he will have to step up his contact and boost his average to be considered a potential regular for the big club.

Having said that? He certainly has the talent to contribute to a contender. The question will become if he can ever raise his bat-to-ball skills to match his stellar speed and defense.
