The New York Mets lost the middle game against the Seattle Mariners but didn't keep it close, dropping the series clinching game 8-3 Tuesday night.
The New York Mets continued its losing ways Tuesday night when the Seattle Mariners clinched their three-game series with an 8-3 win.
The Mets went down early, as Mariners first baseman Patrick Wisdom drilled a two-run home run for his first of the season and first since 2024 to put Seattle on top 2-0 in the second inning. Mets rookie right fielder Carson Benge tied it with a two-run shot of his own in the third, but the Mariners scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead.
Benge hit another home run, but that would be all she wrote for New York. That solo shot was answered by Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez in the next half inning.
Seattle’s Logan Gilbert pitched well, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight in 5.1 innings. New York’s Jonah Tong was the probable starter and pitched, but he came in after reliever Huascar Brazoban opened for 1.2 innings.
Brazoban allowed two runs on three hits and one walk. Tong didn’t fare much better, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work. Tong hadn’t allowed an earned run in 6.2 innings prior to this outing and took the loss.
New York played a sloppy game, committing two errors, and were out-hit 11-to-5. The Mets can still salvage the series, but it will take the team playing complete baseball for nine innings.
Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta will get the ball and try to end the team’s road losing streak against Mariners righty George Kirby.
Peralta assumed the ace role when he was acquired via trade and while he hasn’t pitched as well as he’d hoped, he has still put together a solid season thus far. Peralta is 3-4 with a 3.55 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 68 strikeouts through 12 starts (66 innings).
The two-time All-Star has been roughed up a bit his last couple of starts, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 15 hits and three walks with 14 strikeouts in his last 11.2 innings. He will face the following Mariners lineup:
1. J.P. Crawford (SS)
2. Rodriguez (CF)
3. Josh Naylor (1B)
4. Randy Arozarena (LF)
5. Luke Raley (RF)
6. Cole Young (2B)
7. Dominic Canzone (DH)
8. Jhonny Pereda (C)
9. Colt Emerson (3B)
Kirby is 5-4 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 59 strikeouts through 12 starts (74 innings). Kirby has also been hit hard his last few outings, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) on 21 hits and three walks while fanning 13 over his last 17 innings. He will face the following Mets lineup:
1. Benge (RF)
2. Bo Bichette (SS)
3. Juan Soto (DH)
4. Jared Young (1B)
5. Brett Baty (3B)
6. Marcus Semien (2B)
7. A.J. Ewing (CF)
8. MJ Melendez (LF)
9. Luis Torrens (C)
First pitch is at 3:40 p.m. EDT on MLB.TV and regional sports networks.
