The New York Mets were ousted 5-2 by the crosstown New York Yankees in Game 1 of the Subway Series after Cam Schlittler dominated.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that the New York Mets lost Game 1 of the Subway Series 5-2 to the New York Yankees, the team received unfortunate news regarding one of its best starting pitchers.

Right-hander Clay Holmes, who had been pitching like a Cy Young candidate coming into play Friday, fractured his fibula on a 111-mph comebacker off the bat of Yankees prospect outfielder Spencer Jones in the fourth inning. Holmes managed to pitch into the fifth inning and throw 26 more pitches before being removed.

What a gutsy performance from a guy with a broken leg, facing one of the best offenses in Major League Baseball. Holmes threw 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight.

He will be out indefinitely, which is obviously a huge blow for the Mets and Holmes, who became a trade candidate with New York having lost many games to start the season.

Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler was dominant yet again this season, tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. The promising 25-year-old is now 6-1 (tied-second) with a 1.35 ERA (best) and 0.78 WHIP (second) with 68 punchouts (third).

Game 2 of the Subway Series will see a pitching matchup between Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon and Mets right-handed reliever Huascar Brazoban.

Rodon is making only his second start this season after undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone spur in Oct. 2025. He drew the Milwaukee Brewers for his first outing, and the Brewers tagged him for three runs on two hits and five walks, striking out four times.

Rodon was reportedly happy with his velocity but upset with his control, so fans should expect the talented lefty to command the strike zone better. He was 18-9 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 33 starts last season before going down in the playoffs.

Brazoban will be the opener and cede to left-hander David Peterson for the bulk innings. Brazoban is 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 18 appearances (two opening starts, 21 innings). He delivered 2.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts in relief against the Detroit Tigers on May 13 his last time out.

Peterson has been much better since being moved to the bullpen and has pitched well in bulk. When he starts, he gets rocked, but he does well when he doesn’t face the top of the order to begin games. He threw five innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts his last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. EDT on FOX and MLB.TV.
