The New York Mets allowed a seven-run fourth inning and went on to lose 14-2 to the Washington Nationals in game two of a three-game set.
After losing the second of a three-game series to the Washington Nationals Wednesday, the New York Mets are now 10-20 entering the final day of April.
Entering the final day of April in 2025, the Mets were 19-7 during the month and 21-8 overall. New York did lose its final game for a final April record of 19-8, but it’s still a drastic difference compared to New York’s record on this day last year.
The Mets have had an easy schedule up to this point and haven’t taken advantage of it. The most recent example is the team its facing now, the Nationals, which entered this series three games under .500. New York took the first game 8-0 but were eviscerated in game two of the series 14-2.
The Nationals were up 2-0 after the first inning and star outfielder Juan Soto cut the deficit to one run with a solo home run in the third, but the Nationals would use a seven-run fourth inning that was capped off by a Brady House grand slam to cruise the rest of the way.
Washington right-hander Cade Cavalli issued a lot of traffic but only gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over six innings to earn his first win of the season. New York lefty David Peterson, who made his first start since being relegated to the bullpen a couple of weeks ago, was shelled in this one.
Peterson allowed seven runs on five hits and three walks while fanning five in just 3.2 innings before being replaced by left-hander Sean Manaea, who also got rocked by Washington’s offense, surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
The Mets didn’t reach 20 losses until May 20 last season and when it rains, it pours; center fielder Luis Robert Jr. was just placed on the injured list with a herniated disc in his back, joining shortstop Francisco Lindor on the shelf.
While Soto is back in the lineup, he hasn’t taken the field due to forearm tightness. This team can’t seem to catch a break. But the Mets can end April on a high note with a win and series victory over a division rival on Thursday.
Mets ace righty Freddy Peralta squares off with Nationals right-hander Miles Mikolas in the rubber match. Peralta is 1-3 with a 3.90 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through six starts (32.1 innings) while Mikolas is 0-3 with a 8.49 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in six appearances (three starts, 23.1 innings).
Peralta hasn’t pitched how he and the Mets would’ve liked to this point, but he hasn’t been horrible. He has pitched into the sixth inning four times but has completed six innings only once so far. Peralta will battle the following lineup:
1. James Wood (RF)
2. Luis Garcia Jr. (1B)
3. Daylen Lile (LF)
4. CJ Abrams (SS)
5. Jose Tena (DH)
6. Jorbit Vivas (3B)
7. Nasim Nunez (2B)
8. Drew Millas (C)
9. Jacob Young (CF)
Mikolas was sent to the bullpen after his start on April 8, and the results were mixed. He returns to the starting rotation to face this lineup:
1. Bo Bichette (3B)
2. Soto (DH)
3. MJ Melendez (LF)
4. Mark Vientos (1B)
5. Brett Baty (RF)
6. Marcus Semien (2B)
7. Carson Benge (CF)
8. Luis Torrens (C)
9. Ronny Mauricio (SS)
First pitch is at 1:10 p.m. EDT on MLB.TV and regional sports networks.
