Clay Holmes dominates through six shutout innings while Bichette and Soto ignite the offense in a resounding New York Mets victory.
The New York Mets came into Tuesday night fresh off a disappointing three-game sweep at home to the Colorado Rockies.
Manager Carlos Mendoza's seat is hot, and after Rob Thomson and Alex Cora were fired, many wondered if Mendoza is the next manager to go.
However, the Mets responded in a big way on Tuesday night in an 8-0 win over the Washington Nationals at Citi Field in Queens.
Clay Holmes took the mound for New York, and he threw six shutout innings, giving up just three hits and walking one as he moved to 3-2 on the season with his ERA dropping to 1.75.
Tobias Myers threw two shutout innings, and veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel struck out the side on 14 pitches to seal the deal.
Bo Bichette hit a leadoff home run to give Holmes and the Mets an early 1-0 lead.
However, the bottom of the fourth inning was an explosion by the Mets offense.
Marcus Semien reached on an error, scoring Mark Vientos and MJ Melendez.
Then, Carson Benge had a two-run single to make it 5-0 Mets.
Bichette drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, and Juan Soto put the nail in the coffin with a two-run home run to make it 8-0.
It marked Soto's first home run since returning from injury, and his first RBIs since suffering the injury, so it was an encouraging sign for the Mets.
It was also Bichette's first home run since April 11, so the Mets are certainly hoping that this is a sign of things to come.
Zack Littell got the start for Washington, but he went just 3.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with three walks as he now drops to 0-4 on the season.
The Nationals bullpen threw 4.1 scoreless innings after that with Brad Lord and Andre Granillo combined for a strong outing, but the seven-run fourth inning was too much.
In total, the Nationals had just three hits, all singles, and the last hit came in the top of the fifth inning as Jorbit Vivas had a single.
The Mets are sure hopeful that this offense showing isn't a fluke, especially with Bichette and Soto hitting home runs in this game.
The series continues on Wednesday evening. David Peterson (0-3, 5.06 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets against Cade Cavalli (0-1, 4.01 ERA) and the final game of the series will be on Thursday afternoon.
