ESPN's Jeff Passan suggested the New York Mets might wait before making any trades, but time is running out amid a disappointing start.
The New York Mets have been one of baseball's biggest surprises this season, and not in a good way.
Entering June 4, the Mets are 27-35, last in the National League East, and they have the third-worst record in the entire National League.
Sure, losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz were tough blows, but adding all of Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polacno, Bo Bichette and Freddy Peralta were key moves that were supposed to keep this team competitive.
Right now, the Mets might be forced to sell some pieces at the deadline instead of add and make a playoff push, although that would be a tough pill to swallow for Steve Cohen and the fanbase.
ESPN's Jeff Passan had a new trade intel piece, and he named Peralta as the best potential trade piece for the Mets.
Peralta was acquired in a blockbuster deal with the Milwaukee Brewers this past offseason, and while New York hopes to keep him long-term, they might be able to get a decent return if he were made available.
"Right now, it's grim: last place in the NL East, behind Washington and Miami to say nothing of Atlanta and Philadelphia. And with the compensation for potentially losing Peralta in free agency not close to what he'd demand on the trade market, moving him before Aug. 3 makes the most sense," Passan wrote.
At the same time, Passan thinks the Mets will wait a little bit before making any decisions. Here is what Passan wrote about the Mets' objective in regards to the deadline: "Wait to get healthy before making any decisions."
All of Kodai Senga, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor are currently injured for the Mets, and Polanco is nearing a return after more than a month on the IL, so maybe the Mets are going to wait to see what happens when this team is at full strength.
The biggest issue in trading away Peralta is getting back anywhere close to the value the Mets traded to land him. New York sent infielder Jett Williams and pitcher Brandon Sproat as part of the package, and both of them were top prospects in the organization.
The Mets lost two out of three games against the Seattle Mariners to start June, and they will now face the San Diego Padres on the road before a tough six-game homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves.
If the Mets don't finish this next stretch of games with some wins, it might really be time to pick up the phones and see what they can get for some of these players, whether they want to accept it or not.
