The New York Mets recent trade with the Athletics was the first topic of discusion on this weeks Roundtable podcast, trading away -Jeff McNeil and receiving Yordan Ramirez, a 17-year-old prospect.
The crew discusses how it appears that New York is starting some sort of rebuild, losing some staples in the clubhouse to free agency and trading away others. However, Peter isn't sold on a rebuild just yet and thinks David Stearns is rather attempting a restructure -- what do you think the front office is trying to do this offseason?
Bob notes that the rest of the National League East has kept up with their appearances and gotten better in this offseason, meaning New York still has some work to do with their unit on the field.
The trio also mentions the reports that shortstop Francisco Lindor and McNeil allegedly had a confrontation last season that caused a rift in the clubhouse -- which begs the question of whether that situation caused the club to trade away McNeil and paved the way for his departure.
Was Brandon Nimmo and McNeil's time with New York closed due to a clubhouse problem? That may be for you to decide, and listen to the full podcast to see what Lucas, Peter and Bob have to say about it.
The Mets also signed Jorge Polanco earlier this month, and the initial thought was that he could not replace Pete Alonso at first base. However, we have since learned that the plan is actually to have Polanco play first for New York, and the group discusses how they think he'll do on the corner -- a switch from the middle infield.
Examining reports on the current state of the Mets' free agency targets, New York has been rumored to be interested in signing another outfielder, with a specific link to either Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.
Peter provides an interesting solution that you'd have to listen to the full show to hear, and one that Mets fans would love to see come to fruition.
All three of them agree that it would be possible for the Mets to make the move that Peter suggested, and want Steve Cohen not to shy away from spending as much money as he can to get some deals done.
