The New York Mets couldn't hit or score against Cam Schlittler and three relievers in a 2-0 loss to the Yankees.
The New York Mets were dominated by Cam Schlittler and a trio of relievers in the final game of the Subway Series as they lost to the New York Yankees, 2-0, to drop the rubber game.
This game was all about the pitching, especially Schlittler. He gave the Mets nothing for the first six innings, and his final line featured just a hit and pair of walks to go with eight strikeouts.
Mets starter Christian Scott was good, just not good enough. The Yankees struck first off Scott in the first inning as Ben Rice got him with a solo homer to make it 1-0. Scott gave up another long ball in the third from Austn Wells, and that gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead.
Scott’s final line was strong, as he wound up giving up just three hits and a pair of walks to go with seven strikeouts, with the long ball being his undoing on this particular day.
In theory the Mets had a chance to come back as they got Schlittler out of the game relatively early, but it didn’t work out that way on the field. Yankee relievers Brent Headrick, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar all threw scoreless innings, with Bednar picking up his 34th save as he closed it out.
The Mets wound up with just three hits for the game, with none for extra bases. Brett Baty got the hit off Schlittler, with Bo Bichette and Francisco Alvarez getting the other two singles. They also struck out a total of ten times in a day full of offensive futility.
The Mets also got some strong work from their bullpen after Scott left, with Nate Lavender and Austin Warren adding scoreless frames to complete a fine effort that likely would have been worth a win against most other starters.
The win didn’t help the Yankees, though, as the Tampa Bay Rays picked up a 14-4 win over the Houston Astros to maintain their four-game lead. The Yankees how have 13 games left to make up that margin, so it looks like they’re going to be locked into the top wild card spot in the AL playoffs.
The loss hurt the Mets as well, as they had built up a slight lead over the Washington Nationals in their effort to climb out of the NL East basement. They’re now virtually tied with the Nats again, as Washington swept out the Los Angeles Angels at home to make a charge.
