The New York Mets had a tough series in Chicago, so they'll be looking to rebound against Milwaukee tonight.
The New York Mets will get back in action tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of what promises to be a tough three-game test. The Brewers are battling the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball and home field advantage throughout the postseason, with several other teams on the edge of being in the mix as well.
The Mets will send Zac Thornton to the mound, and Thornton has been the definition of solid so far for the Mets. His starts have been a bit like clockwork, as Thornton typically goes 5-6 innings and gives up three runs as he throws strikes and pitches to contact.
The home run has been his bugaboo lately, as San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. got him last week as part of his two-run game, and Thornton wound up taking a 5-2 loss. The left-hander is still finding his way, and he tends to get hit hard when he leaves balls in the middle of the plate, so he’ll be looking to work the edges against a tough Brewers lineup that can hit from top to bottom.
Thornton’s mound opponent will be Kyle Harrison, who is coming off a shutout effort where he got a lot of support, as the Brewers blasted the Seattle Mariners, 22-0. The young lefty seems to have found a home in Milwaukee after rough stops with the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox, and he’ll be a tough matchup for the Mets lineup, as he’s currently pitching to an ERA of just 2.84 with a WHIP of 1.11.
Hot hitters to watch for Milwaukee include William Contreras, who’s gotten back on track in a big way in the last week or so after having a tough July and August. His slash line for his last seven games is a phenomenal .448/.485/.621 in 29 at-bats, but it’s really just pitching, defense and timely hitting games that wins games for the Brew Crew.
The Brewers have also won three straight series, so they’ll be looking to extend that streak agains the Mets. New York, meanwhile, will be looking to get back on track after losing a tough series to the Chicago White Sox, and the Mets have a chance to pass the plummeting Washington Nationals in this series , as the two teams are separated by just a game in the loss column at the moment.
