The New York Mets lost Christian Scott to injury as he'll be headed to the IL with a possible hip injury.
The New York Mets have been fighting a war of attrition with their starting rotation, and the latest casualty of their battle to field healthy starter is Christian Scott, who will be heading to the IL with what’s believed to be a hip injury, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic.
The Mets are still reeling after losing right-hander Clay Holmes to a broken fibula, and they’ve been using a variety of fill-ins for the last couple of weeks. Scott was one of those fill-ins early in the season, but he’d been building on some shaky initial starts to become increasingly reliable.
The good news is that his hip issue is also believed to be minor, Sammon added. Scott has posted a 3.10 ERA in over 40-2/3 innings in nine starts, and this is his first season back from Tommy John surgery after sitting out all of last season.
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Mets, as they’re currently seven games under .500 going into their series opener on the road against the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets are believed to be calling up reliever Tobias Myers from Triple-A Syracuse to start tonight’s game, but Myers hasn’t been stretched out as a starter, so he won’t be on the mound for very long.
The next man up may be Kodai Senga, who just had a strong start in his latest rehab outing. Senga recently six innings of one-run ball at Double-A Binghamton, according to Sammon, where he gave up just a hit and a walk.
The younger candidates to step in are Jonah Tong and Zach Thornton, but the Mets have been there, done that with both pitchers without much luck. The Mets would undoubdtedly prefer to keep both at Triple-A Syracuse, Tong especially, but they may not have a choice.
The rock-solid rotationo pitchers are Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean and Sean Manaea. Manaea is especially problematic, though, as he’s just come through a period during which the Mets have been rebuilding his delivery to add velocity, so he’s by no means reliable at this point.
The Mets are also recalling right-hander Jonathan Pintaro from Triple-A, according to Sammon via league sources. Pintaro recently had a successful stint as a reliever in which he allowed one run, a hit and a walk with five strikeouts over three appearances. He last pitched on Wednesday, Sammon added, so he’s rested and ready and will likely see action in Cincinnati.
