Mets Named One Of MLB.com's Most Improved Teams cover image

Despite losing stars, a flurry of blockbuster trades and signings propelled the Mets into MLB.com's most improved teams.

The New York Mets entered the offseason with a lot of question marks.

Early on, things looked rough. All-Star closer Edwin Diaz signed a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets also traded away Brandon Nimmo and others, but they somehow added a flurry of players.

The Mets landed Milwaukee Brewers star pitcher Freddy Peralta in a blockbuster trade, and the contract extension question will be asked time and time again in 2026.

And, somehow, the Mets brought in Bo Bichette on a three-year deal that will pay the former Blue Jays $42 million a year.

Mike Petriello of MLB.com named 10 teams that were the most improved this offseason, and the Mets landed at No. 10.

Petriello's rankings were based on WAR, and the Mets have a +4.8 WAR from the offseason moves.

Some other notable Mets moves were a trade for Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., the signing of ex-Seattle Mariners infielder Jorge Polanco, and acquiring veteran Marcus Semien in the trade that sent Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers.

Luke Weaver and Devin Williams came to town to add to the bullpen, and there's a chance that Williams can replace Diaz, although it is a downgrade from the All-Star closer that Diaz was during his time in Queens.

Of course, losing Alonso was a tough blow, and it will take time for Mets fans to get used to seeing Alonso wearing anything other than blue and orange.

One thing that New York needed urgently was a top-tier starter. Rumors swirled about a potential trade for San Diego Padres ace Nick Pivetta, and former Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez was also linked to the Mets in free agency.

However, Peralta fits the bill there, and a six-man rotation looks very likely for New York with Jonah Tong potentially being the odd man out, and that shows how deep this rotation can be in 2026.

When Steve Cohen began the offseason, things looked bleak, especially after Diaz and Alonso left in a matter of days.

But, who saw the Mets landing Bichette? Who saw the Mets also adding Peralta, Robert and the others? At the very least, the New York front office made an attempt to improve and make a run for the National League East this upcoming season.
