The New York Mets broke open a tight pitching duel with four runs in the eighth to win 3 of 4 against the Giants.
The New York Mets came from behind to post a 3-1 series win against the San Francisco Giants, as they rallied in the eighth inning to win the final game of the four-game set, 5-2.
This one started out as a pitchers duel between Mets starter Kodai Senga and his Giants counterpart, Logan Webb. The Mets got on the board first in the second on yet another clutch hit from Mark Vientos, who drove in a run with a single to give New York a 1-0 lead.
Senga made that lead hold up with some brilliant pitching into the sixth, but the Giants finally broke through in that inning on an RBI double by Chapman and a bloop single by Rafael Devers to take a 2-1 lead.
The Mets threatened in the seventh by loading the bases, but it took a big rally in the eighth to take the lead. The key hits were supplied by Luis Torrens, Vientos and Marcus Semien as the Mets plated four to go up 5-2.
Some sloppy defense from the Giants helped contribute to the rally, with Luis Robert Jr. stealing second by avoiding the tag from second baseman Luis Arraez when Roberts was out by a wide margin. Third baseman Matt Chapman committed yet another error to add to his rough defensive start as his throwing miscue brought in the fourth run.
Senga didn’t get the win, but he gave the Mets another strong start, which allowed the Mets to use relievers Huascar Brazoban and Luke Weaver to get to closer Devin Williams.
Matt Chapman singled off Williams to get the ninth off to a grim start, but he did the Mets a favor by trying to steal a base while down three runs and getting gunned down by replacement catcher Luis Torrens, who subbed in for Francisco Alvarez and wound up driving in the winning run.
Williams went on to complete the his second save to get Brazoban the win despite the closer giving up another hit, and the victory gave the Mets a three-game winning streak going into their home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Mets have now scored 24 runs on 40 hits in their last three games, and they’ll get a travel day off tomorrow before they send Freddy Peralta to the mound on Tuesday against Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks, who have been hit hard by a rash of early-season injuries.
