The New York Mets basically don't have an offense right now, and they were shut down completely today.
The New York Mets offense took the weekend off in Arizona, and the result was yet another loss 5-1, to the Arizona Diamondbacks as starter Eduardo Rodriguez went 8-1/3 innings and gave up four hits while dominating the Mets from start to finish. The loss ended the Mets’ series-win streak at two as they dropped two of three over the weekend.
The Mets went with an opener in this one, and it didn’t go well. Huascar Brazoban put the Mets down 2-0 in the second inning by walking Ildemaro Vargas and Nolan Arenado, at which point Tobias Myers replaced him and Ryan Waldschmidt hit a two-run double.
The Mets offense stayed static as usual as they went hitless through five innings, but they finally broke through in the sixth against Rodriguez. Carson Benge muscled a single to center, and Luis Torrens lined a double to right that brought home the speedy Benge.
David Peterson entered the game in the third, and he was badly betrayed by his defense in the sixth as the Diamondbacks broke the game open. Third baseman Andy Ibanez started the trouble with a throwing error, and Arizona capitalized on his miscue with what became a four-run rally.
The key hits were an RBI single from Waldschmidt, and Ketel Marte drove home two more with a triple that got away from Benge after hitting the bottom of the right field wall. The miscues made the runs unearned, but the damage was done nonetheless.
That -5-1 lead was all Rodriguez needed as he cruised through a rocking-chair outing. He nearly went the distance, but a bloop single by Mark Vientos in the ninth brought in Juan Morillo to finish the game.
The devil’s in the details when ti comes to the Mets offense, and those details are ugly and then some. Most of the blame lands on Juan Soto and Bo Bichette at the top of the lineup, with Soto stuck in a 2-for-26 stretch while Bichette’s hitless streak is now at 0-for-15. The Mets had just 12 hits in the three games, and they’re the second-lowest scoring team in baseball, ahead of only the San Francisco Giants.
The Mets face a long plane ride home after a 5-4 road trip, and they’ll face the Detroit Tigers at Citi Field for a three-game set that starts on Tuesday night. They're sure to hear the boo birds again at home, especially Bichette and Soto.
