The New York Mets entered the offseason with tons of questions, especially after a disappointing ending that saw them miss the postseason.
The biggest question is obviously the status of slugger Pete Alonso.
Once again, the future is unclear for Alonso, although he has spent his entire MLB career with the Mets.
In 2025, he hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI, which marked his most RBI since 2022.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report wrote predictions for the top free agents, and the ideal spot for Alonso is the Mets, unsurprisingly.
Here's what Rymer wrote on "Why He Should Sign Soon."
"We knew as far back as September that Pete Alonso was planning on declining his $24 million player option for 2026, and now we know what kind of deal he wants. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the slugging first baseman will be seeking at least a seven-year contract this winter. If so, it would seem that Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, haven't fully moved on from the $200 million dream they reportedly shared in 2024."
As far as the contract goes, it seems Alonso's chances of cashing in this time are better than last offseason.
"Alonso should have a better chance of landing the mega-deal he covets after settling for a two-year, $54 million deal to return to the Mets in February. He's coming off a much better season this time, notably by way of an 83-point boost in OPS. He also isn't eligible for a qualifying offer," Rymer wrote.
Could Alonso wait and see how things play out? Of course, but Rymer expects them to do things differently this time around.
"Rather than wait for others to do it, the better play for Alonso and Boras is to move quickly to set the market themselves."
It shouldn't be a surprise that the Mets and Alonso want to make things work. Sure, there are other ways they could go, and Alonso could wait and cash in even bigger, although his best chance of making a postseason run while making a ton of money could be with the Mets.
