Christian Scott's promising return season is over after a late knee injury, while the Mets activated Devin Williams for the final few games.
The New York Mets have shut down one of their young starting pitchers just days before the end of the season.
Right-hander Christian Scott was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with left knee inflammation, ending his 2026 season.
The Mets activated veteran reliever Devin Williams from the injured list in the corresponding move.
Scott's injury occurred before his final start Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Manager Andy Green said Scott slipped on the mound while warming up but did not initially tell the team. His knee later swelled, and the Mets noticed a slight decrease in his velocity during the game.
Green said the Mets do not believe Scott is dealing with a long-term problem but saw no reason to push him with the season ending Sunday.
The injury brings an early end to an encouraging comeback season for the 27-year-old.
Scott missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery before returning to the Mets' rotation this year.
He went 4-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 23 starts, striking out 134 batters in 110 innings.
His return gave the Mets another young starting option and put Scott back into the organization's plans heading toward 2027.
Williams, meanwhile, will get an opportunity to make a few more appearances before his first season with New York ends.
The two-time All-Star had been sidelined since Aug. 7 because of a right shoulder strain. His absence came amid significant turnover in a bullpen that has performed surprisingly well despite the changes.
Williams is 3-2 with a 4.66 ERA and 16 saves in 42 appearances this season.
The Mets signed him to a three-year, $51 million contract in December after Edwin Díaz departed for the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency.
Green said the Mets hope Williams can pitch a couple of times before Sunday's season finale but aren't concerned about immediately returning him to a particular bullpen role.
Kodai Senga has handled closing duties during Williams' absence.
For the Mets, the final few games now provide an opportunity to get Williams back on a major-league mound before the offseason begins.
Scott's season, however, is officially finished after an encouraging return from major elbow surgery.
