The New York Mets are sending two players to the Chicago Cubs in a last-minute trade deadline deal.

The New York Mets' incredibly disappointing season has led to the tough reality that the club is among the sellers ahead of this year's Major League Baseball trade deadline.

The Mets sit at the bottom of the National League East with an embarrassing 47-66 record entering Monday, forcing owner Steve Cohen and general manager David Stearns to sell off its roster in exchange for prospects.

With just over an hour remaining until MLB's trade deadline comes to a close, the Mets traded away a pair of major league-ready talents-- but the return should excite fans.

"Source: the Mets are trading Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor to the Cubs for their No. 2 prospect, Jefferson Rojas," Mets' beat writer Anthony Dicomo reported Monday afternoon.

Holmes had a 2.39 ERA with a 45-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .206 batting average against and a 1.10 WHIP in 52 2/3 innings pitched across nine games this season.

Taylor was hitting .241 with 18 extra-base hits including 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and a .793 OPS in 67 games for New York this season.

Losing Holmes, a starting pitcher with over a year of team control left on his contract, will negatively affect New York's rotation moving forward.

However, the 2026 season is already a loss for the Mets, and there's not necessarily a reason to look to compete.

Now, the Mets have one of baseball's most exciting prospects in their farm system, infielder Jefferson Rojas.

Climbing all the way up to the Cubs' No. 2 prospect on MLB Pipeline's ranking, Rojas has the potential to be a star in Queens.

The 21-year-old can play almost anywhere in the infield, having logged numerous games between shortstop, second and third base.

Rojas hit .270 with 35 extra-base hits including 15 home runs, 57 RBIs and a .800 OPS in 91 games for the Cubs' Double-A Affiliate, Knoxville Smokies, this season.

The infielder likely won't reach the major league level for quite some time, but Rojas immediately becomes one of New York's most exciting prospects to keep an eye on.

This move may not be the last up Stearns' sleeve, as the trade deadline inches closer. The Mets are in fire sale mode, with many more names believed to be in trade talks.

With relievers Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazoban, catcher Ben Rortvedt, left-hander Brooks Raley and now Homes and Talylor already shipped out, the Mets might still have a few more trades on the horizon before the 6:00 P.M. EST trade deadline.
