The New York Mets need a spark, and they're hoping outfielder Tommy Pham can provide some offense this week in LA.

The New York Mets are expected to call up outfielder Tommy Pham in advance of their upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a report from Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Pham was signed to a minor league deal on March 27, and the Mets are rushing him to the majors for a reason. They signed Pham earlier this month, but their offense has been struggling, and the Mets are hoping Pham can help. The 38-year old outfielder has been a spark plug for several teams, including the Mets, and that’s what New York is hoping for again this time around.

Pham’s last stint with the Mets was in 2023, when Pham played in 79 games. He hit .268 with 10 home runs to go with an .820 OPS, but Pham isn’t a guy who sticks around for very long. He played with the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals before spending 2025 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he posted a slash line of .245/.330/.370 slash line with 10 homers and 52 RBIs. Pham has played for a total of ten teams in his big league career, which began in 2014.

The Mets would be fine with his recent slash line, as their lineup hasn’t hit at all. They were shut out twice over the weekend by the Athletics, and they’re without star outfielder Juan Soto for at least another week as he recovers from a calf strain. The Mets have averaged just 1.6 runs per game since Soto went out, according to DiComo, and they’ll be heavy underdogs against the Dodgers this week.

Pham played six games at St. Lucie as the Mets ramped him up to make his return to Citi field, and the outfielder went 2-for-12 with an RBI. It’s unclear who Pham will replace, however, as the Mets have praised rookie Carson Benge even though Benge has a slash line of 130/.231/.196 through 14 games. Team officials have praised Benge for some better at-bats in recent days, and yesterday he made a sliding catch yesterday that saved two runs.

Benge can also play all three outfield positions, which is a major need with Soto out, although he did make a pair of errors over the weekend. According to DiComo, Pham could be in the starting lineup as soon as tonight, as the Mets face Dodgers left- hander Justin Wrobleski in the series opener and Pham has a career OPS of .802 against lefties.
