The New York Mets traded David Peterson after dropping the second game of their doubleheader against Chicago.
The New York Mets waved the surrender flag on several front last night, dropping an ugly 10-5 game to the Chicago Cubs that “featured” six infield errors in the second game of a doubleheader sweep. After the game, the Mets announced that they've traded left-hander David Peterson to the Cubs, according to a report from Jorge Castillo of ESPN.
The game was yet another example of a typical Mets loss these days, as they’re now in the middle of a five-game losing streak. Shortstop Francisco Lindor marked his return to Citi Field with a first-inning error, and he wound up committing another error while going 0-for-5.
The offensive hero for the Cubs was normally light-hitting shortstop Dansby Swanson, who put the Cubs ahead for good with an run-scoring triple that was part of a four-RBI night. The game was tight through six, but the Cubs took control on Swanson’s hit as reliever Brooks Raley took the loss by giving up pivotal runs in that inning, and Chicago added four more runs in the last two innings to make the game a route.
The Mets were a busy bunch in this one, as they hit four homers and committed six errors. The homers were from Bo Bichette, Mark Vientos, Francisco Alvarez and A.J. Ewings, with Lindor and first baseman Mark Vientos committing two errors each to go with an error by Bichette at third to go with another by second baseman Marcus Semien.
The decision to trade Peterson seemed especially apt given the outcome of the game. He was once an All-Star who was one of the best pitchers in the game, and Peterson had an ERA of 2,83 through August 6 of last season. But his current numbers include an ERA of 6.98 in 17 starts and eight relief appearances after being demoted to the bullpen.
The Mets will receive minor league infielder Cole Mathis in a deal that could mark the beginning of a massive selloff, as New York remains buried in the basement of the NL East. The Mets are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak after being swept so far by the Cubs, and they have several other once-key players who are likely to be moved.
The Mets announced earlier this week that they were going to wait until the trade deadline before they start making moves, but that seems to have changed due to their ongoing poor play, especially in this series against Chicago.
