The New York Mets aren't going to be buying at the MLB trade deadline next month and should be selling its veteran players.

The New York Mets are falling further and further from playoff contention with almost every passing day, more than likely meaning a huge trade deadline fire sale could be upon us.

The Mets were embarrassed by the Atlanta Braves on the Fourth of July, getting walloped 14-3 for its 12th loss over their last 14 games. The Braves hit five home runs and had a six-run lead by the end of the fourth inning before the Mets finally got on the board with a Tyrone Taylor solo homer in the fifth and a Mark Vientos two-run homer in the sixth.

Veteran left-hander Sean Manaea completed five innings but allowed six runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four. Although his season ERA sits at 5.16 after the outing, the 34-year-old could be moved to a pitcher-needy team at the deadline.

Major League Baseball insider Jon Heyman, who spends a lot of time covering the Mets, suggested that it’s time for the fire sale to commence and named a short list of players who are most likely to stick around beyond Aug. 3.

“Time for Mets deadline sale to begin,” Heyman wrote in an X post Sunday morning. “Everyone but [A.J.] Ewing, [Carson] Benge, [Nolan] McLean, [Christian] Scott and [Juan] Soto should be made available.”

Although New York’s season has been an utter disaster thus far, the rookies and young players have played quite well.

Ewing was called up to replace the injured Luis Robert Jr., who hasn’t panned out, and has done a great job. Benge got off to a bit of a slow start but has been one of the best all-around players for the Mets and has been rising in the National League Rookie of the Year rankings.

McLean was lights-out to begin the season and after a short funk, he appears to be back to dominating opposing lineups. Scott has great stuff and will be a solid mid-rotation arm for years to come, while Soto’s resume and contract situation speaks for itself.

Heyman didn’t include shortstop Francisco Lindor in that post and didn’t mean for it to be a knock on Lindor, but given the state of the team and the “drama” involving Soto behind the scenes, he believes that the Mets need to consider almost anything.

One player who seems destined to be moved at the deadline is right-handed starter Freddy Peralta, who hasn’t pitched as well as he or the Mets would have liked and is owed just $8 million on his expiring contract.

Plenty of teams need pitching and should be in on Peralta despite his 4.81 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and declining strikeout rate.
