Gunnar Henderson’s late-inning blast spoiled a nostalgic night in Queens as Baltimore edged out a victory during the Polar Bear's emotional, hitless homecoming to Citi Field.
The New York Mets don't have much to be excited about in what has been a very frustrating year in Queens.
On Monday night, fans were showing excitement with the Baltimore Orioles coming to town, and the reason is because it marked the return of Pete Alonso.
Alonso, a long-time Mets favorite, made his much-anticipated return to Citi Field after he signed a five-year, $155 million deal this past offseason.
Plenty of signs were sign at Citi Field, and in the end, the orioles took the 2-1 victory as Gunnar Henderson's solo home run in the eighth proved to be the difference maker.
Here was the reaction from the Mets fans as Alonso stepped to the plate in the first inning.
Steve Cohen also spoke to Alonso before the game.
It was quite a warm reception for Alonso, although the slugger went hitless in the Orioles win.
However, Alonso almost hit career home run No. 300, although the ball was just foul in what would've been an awesome moment to remember.
For the Mets, Jonah Tong got the start and pitched well. He went six innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts and an unearned run.
Dedniel Nunez got the loss as he allowed a run and two hits in one inning, and it marked the first loss of the season for Nunez.
The Orioles got another strong outing from Brandon Young, who allowed one run on five hits in five innings, and it's positive after he gave up six runs on eight hits last time out against the Cleveland Guardians.
After Alonso's final at-bat in the eighth inning, video captured plenty of fans heading for the exits even though the game was tied.
The Mets also made sure to pay respect to Alonso with a tribute video that appeared on the screen before the game.
It began with Alonso as a kid and then showed plenty of highlights from his time with the Mets.
The Mets are still in last place in the National League East with a 69-81 record, and it marked their third loss in four games as the season can't come to an end soon enough.
The Mets will take on the orioles on Tuesday in the second game of the three-game series. Shane Baz takes the mound for Baltimore as Sean Manaea will hop on the rubber for New York as fans will likely flock to see Alonso once again.
