The New York Mets had an opportunity to start building up the win column against one of MLB's worst teams, the Colorado Rockies, but were swept over the weekend.

When the New York Mets lost its 12th straight game, a 5-3 loss against the Minnesota Twins in which the Mets were leading 3-0, the Twins poked some fun at the Mets on social media.

Minnesota’s social media admin posted a win graphic on X with the caption, “Things you can get in a dozen: eggs, roses, Mets losses.”

When the Twins are roasting you, you know it’s not going well. The Mets would go on to snap its losing streak by winning the final two games and the series over the Twins, but it didn’t stop the team from being a laughingstock around the baseball world. But with a series against the Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals coming up, it was a chance for the Mets to start stacking up wins and get back into contention.

The Rockies had other plans, though. Coming into the series, the Rockies were 10-16 and in last place of the National League West but were playing better baseball as of late. That trend continued into Citi Field as the Rockies swept the three-game series, which included a doubleheader on Sunday.

It was the first time the Rockies swept the Mets since 2018, according to ESPN Research, and Colorado’s social media admin took a page out of Minnesota’s book by trolling New York on X.

They tagged the Empire State Building X account with a suggestion, a picture of the building lit up with Rockies purple to celebrate the sweep. Once again, everyone on social media was laughing at New York’s expense.

After moving on from several franchise cornerstone players in an attempt to improve the defense and focus on “run prevention,” the Mets figured its team would be much better off with its new additions. And yet, the team is much worse off and haven’t gotten enough contributions from guys not named center fielder Luis Robert Jr.

Even Robert has been on a sharp decline since his red-hot start, hitting just .200 with a .577 OPS this month. Aside from right-handed starters Clay Holmes, Nolan McLean and Freddy Peralta, the pitching staff has been brutal to watch – especially late in games when the bullpen takes over.

The Mets are off today, so it’s impossible for the team to lose, but it continues its homestand against the Nationals on Tuesday. It will be Holmes against Washington’s Zack Littell.

If the Mets can’t find a way to win the series, manager Carlos Mendoza’s seat will continue to heat up.
