Despite a nightmare 2026 season, Jonah Tong, Jacob Reimer, and A.J. Ewing emerge as elite beacons of hope, offering the flexibility to anchor a much-needed Queens turnaround.

The 2026 season has been far from kind to the New York Mets. From legit World Series conversations from before this season to holding sole possession of last place in the National League East, this year has been nightmarish for New York.

Still, there are a lot worse positions a franchise could be in. The Mets possess one of the most involved and invested owners in professional sports, Steve Cohen. There are several stars on the Mets roster to build around after this season. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the Mets’ ability to retain prospect talent in its system.

Having sufficient talent within the organization provides immense flexibility for a club like the Mets, whose goal is to make a postseason run year after year. Whether they have young talent rise through the ranks and contribute on a major league level or use those prospects to land a proven MLB star, having a rich pool of prospects is one of the most advantageous things in the sport.

Despite trading away several of its top prospects during the offseason, New York still has more in its pocket. In Bleacher Report’s latest prospect ranking by position, the Mets had three of their own making the list.

Pitcher Jonah Tong came in as the No. 3 right-handed prospect on the list. After struggling during his first major league stint at the end of last season, Tong was sent back down to Triple-A to start the 2026 campaign. He’s since earned his spot on the major league roster again, and in two relief appearances, he has yet to allow a run in 6 ⅔ innings.

After surviving trade conversations throughout the offseason, Tong’s value has risen once again. Whether that value is used in a trade remains to be seen.

Third baseman Jacob Reimer also landed on the list despite taking a step back from last season. His OPS has dropped from .870 in 2025 to .729 in 40 games this season, but he remains a key figure in the Mets’ farm system.

Outfielder A.J. Ewing was the final Met to appear in the list after dominating in 30 minor league games this season. Ewing earned a call-up and has since played 17 games in the majors for New York this season, where he has managed to record a .717 OPS. Ranked as the No. 33 prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com, Ewing provides the Mets with some much-needed depth in a year where the injury bug and underperformance have ravaged the club.

The Mets might not be in a great position this season, as they are already 14.5 games back in the division, but their talented prospects bring some light to their future.
