The New York Mets got plenty of offense early, but things got a little hairy in the later innings.
The New York Mets hit early and often tonight against the Miami Marlins as they ran up a seven-run lead, then held off a Marlins rally to get a 7-5 win and earn a series win in the process.
The Mets caught starter Sandy Alcantra on a day when he had nothing close to his best stuff, and Francisco Lindor started the offensive fireworks with a solo homer to open the game. Jared Young followed up with an RBI single to score a second run and give Sean Manaea a 2-0 lead.
They padded the lead in the second as Juan Soto got in on the long-ball act with a three-run homer to make it 5-0, and Brett Baty followed up with a solo shot in the third to make it 6-0.
Alcantara left in the fifth with one of his worst lines of the season as he gave up seven runs on seven hits to go with four walks and just one strikeout.
The Mets stretched their lead again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0, but the Marlins struck back in a big way in the sixth after five perfect innings from Manaea. The rally started with a single from Jakob Marsee, who went to second on an error by third baseman Brett Baty. Jose Serna doubled him home to get the first run of the game, but the Marlins wreen’t done by any means.
Brian Navaretto doubled to bring home Serna, and Heriberto Hernanez singled Navaretto to third. Otto Lopez then singled to bring home Navarettoo and make it 7-3, and that brought on Jonathan Pintaro to relieve Manaea. Javier Sanoja singled to center to score Lopez to cut the lead to 7-4 and make things interesting.
The Mets bullpen held the line after that, though, with Nate Lavender and Dedniel Nunez pitching scoreless innings to get the game to the ninth.
Kodai Senga came on to close it out, and the adventure started with one out as Joe Mack doubled and Marsee did the same to make it 7-5. A mound visit followed, and Senga threw nothing but forkballs after that and struck out the next two hitters to get his seventh save in seven tries.
The win temporarily vaulted the Mets out of the NL East basement by a half game, pending the results of the Washington Nationals game as they face the San Diego Padres on the road tonight.
