The New York Mets are obviously going to try to sell off as many veterans on expiring deals as possible before the trade deadline with few untouchables.
The New York Mets have an obvious plan in place for this year’s trade deadline: sell anyone that isn’t the outfield core or right-hander Nolan McLean.
The Mets will try to get an much as they can for veterans on expiring contracts as well as younger players that don’t seem to fit into the organization’s long-term plans. Pitchers like Freddy Peralta, who has one year left on his contract and is set to hit free agency, will be the top priority over the next few days.
ESPN’s Jorge Castillo mapped out the perfect and ideal Mets trade deadline and listed three objectives: unload Peralta, Luis Robert Jr. and other impending free agents, get a big return for relievers Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazobán, and acquire Reid Detmers or another controllable starter for 2027.
“The names include right-handed starters Peralta and Clay Holmes; left-handed relievers A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley; and outfielders Robert and Tyrone Taylor,” Castillo wrote Wednesday.
It will be hard to trade Robert, who is injury prone with a large amount of money left on his deal and hasn’t played well this season to warrant a lot of interest from other teams. However, the fact that teams are desperate for right-handed bats means a market for Robert could develop as time winds down.
Holmes and the bullpen have been lights-out this season and Taylor is a cheap right-handed bat that has put together a solid season as a fourth outfielder, so moving those guys shouldn’t be a problem – finding a good offer for Peralta might be, as his performance this year has been extremely disappointing.
Weaver and Brazobán could stick around for next season, but they could bring back a haul if moved in the right deal.
“Right-handers Weaver and Brazobán, the team's two best relievers, would help the Mets next season, but they could also fetch them a haul on the trade market.
“Relievers can be fickle year to year, but the Mets unlocked something in Brazobán, and Weaver has established himself as a top-tier bullpen arm over the past three seasons.”
Brazobán has an ERA under 3.00 and Weaver has an ERA under 2.00, making them valuable assets that would be huge additions to contending bullpens. Both are under team control through at least 2027.
This deadline will be used as a reset, but New York will need to address their losses over the next few months, meaning targeting a controllable starter like Detmers to help in the future is important.
“On Friday, president of baseball operations David Stearns noted that the starting rotation is ‘an area we're going to have to look to supplement as we head to '27,’” Castillo wrote.
They would have to give up a lot to acquire someone like Detmers or any other top pitcher that has years of control, but one suggestion from Castillo was moving catcher Francisco Alvarez to the New York Yankees for one of their young starters (Will Warren, Ryan Weathers).
It would be smart of the Mets to do something like that, but regardless, New York will have a busy deadline.
