The New York Mets filled headlines throughout the offseason, making some of the most high-profile transactions of the winter to make up for some key losses. After missing the postseason altogether in 2025, it was an offseason that filled fans in Queens with optimism about their squad’s chances in 2026.
Bleacher Report’s recent article ranked the top three moves of the offseason for every team in the MLB, and the Mets' ranking goes as follows: trading for right-hander Freddy Peralta, signing third baseman Bo Bichette, and signing right-hander Devin Williams. There are several other huge moves the Mets made, but these three will likely have the biggest impact on the club’s chances at a deep run this fall.
Peralta had been linked to the Mets all winter long, and a deal was finally struck in January, sending two of the club’s top prospects to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for the ace. In return, New York is getting one of the game’s very best with one season to go before hitting free agency.
The 29-year-old had a career year in Milwaukee in 2025, recording a 2.70 ERA and 17 wins in 33 starts. He earned a spot on his second All-Star team and finished in fifth place in Cy Young voting. The Mets needed an ace, and they went out and grabbed the top ace available in baseball. His arrival immediately boosts New York’s chances this year.
Bichette’s arrival was one of the more surprising ones this offseason, signing on a short-term deal to play a position he never played before. Though the question of how he will fare at third base is yet to be answered, his bat is sure to show up big time for the Mets. His .840 OPS in 2025 was enough to land him MVP votes, and New York fans are hoping for a similar season at the plate, even if it takes time to adjust defensively.
Williams’ arrival was vital for the Mets this offseason after losing closer Edwin Diaz in free agency. Despite losing possibly the game’s best closer, Williams provides the Mets with a respectable plan B. Though 2025 was by far his worst season yet, it was just his first time posting an ERA over 2.50. His track record shows that he’s still one of the best relievers in the league, and his role in New York’s bullpen in 2026 is hugely important in the wake of Diaz’s loss.
Peralta, Bichette, and Williams are just three of the gamechangers New York brought in this offseason. Looking completely refreshed and seemingly a true contender in the National League, 2026 is on track to end much better than last season did. These three additions will play the biggest role in bringing it to fruition.
