The Washington Nationals scored six runs in the 11th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies to end its seven-game losing streak
The losing streak has officially come to an end at seven games after the Washington Nationals got back in the win column on Wednesday night, taking a 10-4 finish in extra innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Jake Irvin drew the start and allowed one home run, two earned runs and three hits across 5.1 innings, but it would be Clayton Beeter who was credited for the win as manager Blake Butera turned to seven different pitchers through 11 innings.
Shortstop CJ Abrams also finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs in his appearance, while Jacob Young was the second National to record a multi-hit game in the win.
Abrams would be the first one to cross the plate after drawing a hit by pitch in the leadoff spot, setting up Keibert Ruiz for a two-out RBI single in the opening frame. Yet Washington's lead would be brief after Luis Arraez answered with a 385 foot solo shot to begin the second inning before a sac fly to center drove in Brandon Marsh to make it a 2-1 contest.
Washington would get just two on base over the next four innings, until the seventh inning when Brady House, hitting for Jorbit Vivas, launched a 404 foot home run to tie the game at two. Jacob Young kept the bats hot for Washington after doubling into right field, setting up CJ Abrams with an RBI after his single to left drove in Young to push Washington ahead, 3-2.
With Yovanny Cruz on the mound in the bottom of the inning just days after being acquired, the Phillies would get the first two batters on base before an RBI single tied the game once more, enough to send the game into extras.
Both teams traded a run in the tenth inning, but the Nationals would take the game for good in a six run 11th inning. After a leadoff walk, a CJ Abrams triple drove in two runs before none other than ... Miles Mikolas dropped a sac bunt to drive in Abrams, making it 7-4. Philadelphia would turn to its bullpen for the final two outs, but that would come after three more runs after Andres Chaparro doubled into left before Nasim Nunez's grounder drove in Harry Ford, cementing the 10-4 win.
Washington will now look to salvage the series in game four on Thursday night with Miles Mikolas set to take the mound for a 6:05 PM opening pitch.
