The Washington Nationals have acquired infielder Nate Furman from the San Francisco Giants, the second offseason roster move

The Washington Nationals have made another roster move, yet days after that came via the waiver wire, this time it has come through the trade market with president of baseball operations Paul Toboni capitalizing on the roster decisions around the league.

The Nationals have acquired infielder Nate Furman from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for pitching prospect Tony Neubeck.

A Pennsylvania native, the 25 year old began his career with the Cleveland Guardians after being drafted in the fourth round out of the 2022 MLB Draft. Two years later, Furman found himself part of a trade to the Cleveland Guardians, giving him a path to the majors.

His MLB debut came during the second half of the 2026 season where he recorded a .125 batting average and .368 OPS across 32 at bats. His first career hit came against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 25, while he recorded two of his three RBIs in 2026 against the Pittsburgh Pirates after going 1-for-1 on Sept. 1. Furman then recorded a walk-off RBI against the Cardinals on Sept. 7.

While playing in 102 games in Triple A, Furman also recorded a .293 batting average with a .414 slugging and .791 OPS while notching new a career high with 48 RBIs. He has also recorded seven home runs in each of his last three seasons in the minor league, though how big of a role he gets with the Nationals in 2027 could be a question to watch through the offseason given he provides the left handed bat in the lineup.

Neubeck, 23, has wrapped up his first professional season. After appearing in two games in Single A, Neubeck did not allow an earned run and held opposing batters to a .105 average. His first appearance came on Aug. 26 when Neubeck allowed one hit and tossed one walk and five strikeouts across three innings. He followed it up with a second encouraging outing after Neubeck tossed three strikeouts and allowed one hit in three innings on Sept. 1.

This marks the second roster move of the offseason after the front office claimed right handed pitcher Braxton Roxby last week, a move that was made possible after designating left handed pitcher Zak Kent for assignment. Whether this proves to be the final move ahead of Monday's roster deadline remains to be seen with teams needing to remove plays from injured lists, but the Nationals now add another young piece who can be part of the solution in an offseason where pitching is the top priority.
