The good was the Nationals being able to deliver a taste of their own downfall this season to another club after sweeping the Angels in Los Angeles over the weekend to help kick off a four game win streak, a desperately welcomed sight even if all eyes are on the tank with a chance to climb closer toward a top eight pick in the 2027 MLB Draft. Yet that came to fruition on Wednesday night after the Nationals amassed just four hits while the pitching staff combined to toss 13 walks, tying a franchise record, in a 3-0 loss in the final meeting against the Philadelphia Phillies this season. Still, we discuss what went right for the Nationals in a late season swing to provide some highlights even with both CJ Abrams and James Wood sidelined for the latest win.
We also dive into Connelly Early making his rehab appearance in Triple A Rochester this week, an appearance that materialized two days after the veteran saw his scheduled outing canceled due to weather. Early ended his outing after posting two strikeouts, two walks, three earned runs and a pair of hits across one inning, ending his night on 35 pitches and 23 strikeouts in and up and down performance. Still, we discuss whether he ends up making his Nationals debut over the final nine games left in the 2026 regular season -- and whether it even makes sense to.
The Nationals are set to enjoy one of the final three scheduled off days before they kick off the final road trip of the 2026 season this weekend. For the first time since April, Washington will face the St. Louis Cardinals for a three game series beginning Friday, Sept. 18, before traveling north to face the Detroit Tigers. Washington will then close out the regular season at home against the New York Mets beginning next Friday with an opportunity to avoid a fifth place NL East finish with just 1.5 games separating the two teams ahead of Thursday.
