On the latest episode of the DC Roundtable Podcast diving into the Washington Nationals, we discuss James Wood's monster season and what that means for the future
On the next episode of the DC Roundtable Podcast hosted by Tyler Lochte and Ahmed Ghafir diving into the Washington Nationals, we dive into the rise of star outfielder James Wood.
The core piece went on to eclipse 30 home runs for the second consecutive year, while his .891 OPS ranked fifth across baseball. He also led the league with a 95.4 mph average exit velocity and a 58.9% hard-hit rate, while ranking second with a 18.6% barrel rate, according to Baseball Savant. He was also able to cut down on his strikeout rate in 2026 after nearly setting the MLB record in the category the season prior.
It marked a season of development and encouraging sign for Wood, yet he also missed time in 2026 after suffering a left oblique strain during the second half of the season, leading him to miss roughly one month of the regular season before returning for the final games.
Yet with all the attention on addressing the pitching staff, coupled with the front office expected to have to address the CJ Abrams trade market for the second consecutive offseason, we discuss whether James Wood's future should also be one of the top priorities.
After cementing himself among the key foundational pieces in the organization alongside Cade Cavalli, Abrams and likely Connelly Early, the Rockville, Md. native has made clear he's a building block for the Nationals to ultimately transition into a more competitive team under new leadership. Which begs the question, should Wood already be in the mix for a contract extension? Should there be any concern that one will not come to fruition? We discuss what his 2026 season means and why the Nationals need to make clear he's here to stay.
With year one of the Blake Butera and Paul Toboni era officially complete and a chance for the offseason moves now able to address clear holes ahead of a hopeful 2027 season featuring elevated expectations, make sure you stay locked in on the DC Roundtable Podcast as we dive into everything you need to know through the winer.
