With the offseason arrived, why there's reason for optimism surrounding the Washington Nationals this offseason
It was a strange season for the Washington Nationals.
For a while, it felt like a miracle season. Out the gate, Washington was hot, and outperformed nearly every reasonable expectation anyone set for them — they cooled off a bit before the All-Star break, but still sat a game below .500.
Then, the wheels came off.
Injuries, slumps, poor performance and a literal record-bad bullpen completely derailed what once looked like a possible playoff season for D.C., instead ending in another baseball-less October in the nation’s capital. The team was better than most thought they would be, but it was still disappointing given the way the season started.
And yet, heading into the offseason, there are real reasons to be hopeful — not just for next year, but for the team’s long-term future.
Let’s start with the obvious: CJ Abrams and James Wood are both legitimate superstars, and both are still in Washington (a fact that can’t be taken for granted given the team’s recent history of trading stars).
Abrams, who was already good, broke out in a big way in 2026, officially becoming an all star and turning himself into one of the best shortstops in the league. Wood, meanwhile, proved the hot start in 2025 wasn’t a fluke, and showed real MVP potential.
Then, there was the bright spot of the pitching rotation in Cade Cavalli.
Cavalli was excellent in 2026, with a 3.02 ERA — and he looked even better at times. He blossomed into a true ace throughout the season, the kind you can lean on to get a win in playoff series.
Plus, in a move that (again) can’t be taken for granted, the Nationals actually extended Cavalli, keeping him around for the long-term.
There are plenty of other bright spots, from Daylen Lile’s emergence to surprisingly good performances up and down the roster. Plus, there’s the simple fact that this team continued to play hard deep into the season despite not really having anything to play for.
This is a real team, and one that feels on the verge of breaking through to something bigger. Whether it’s this coming year or sometime soon, this is an organization that feels primed to get back to the postseason and maybe make some noise.
The moves the team makes this offseason will be critical, but there is a real case for hope, and reasons to believe that case, for fans in Washington.
