Daylen Lile's numbers weren't as good as in his rookie year, but he showed he is an important piece of the Washington Nationals' future and an all-around MLB player.

Daylen Lile was one of the most hyped players entering the 2026 Washington Nationals season after hitting .299 with a .825 OPS in 91 games as a rookie.

Lile didn't maintain that level of productivity in 2026, but he still put together a productive year, spending the entire season in the Major Leagues. He finished 2026 with splits of .246/.296/.429 and an OPS of .725.

One area of improvement was the defensive side of the ball. Despite batting nearly .300 with 9 home runs in his rookie season, his defense was near the bottom of the league for outfielders. Baseball Savant ranked him in the fifth percentile, with eight outs below average.

In 2026, he moved to left field and still improved his defense. According to Baseball Savant, he was in the 73rd percentile, with one out above average.

The defensive jump goes a long way toward silencing worries about the offensive decline.

Some of his struggles stemmed from his inability to maintain the high contact he had in his rookie season. His sweet-spot percentage dropped from the 100th percentile to the 84th. His whiff rate and strikeout rate both rose in his second season, and his chase rate jumped from 26.7% to 38.5%. His expected batting average fell from .302 to .255.

Lile jumped out to a fast start in 2026, maintaining a .407 batting average through his first two series, but a slow April and May brought him down to earth. He exited May with a .249 average and a .712 OPS.

He began finding his power in July, hitting five home runs and recording two multi-home-run games.

His power metrics increased in his first year under Butera. His barrel percentage increased from 5.2% to 9.6%, and his bat speed also saw a slight increase. His average exit velocity and hard-hit percentage stayed about the same.

August would be his best full month of the season. He batted .292 with .547 slugging and seven home runs.

He followed that with his worst month of the season in September, hitting just .171 and finishing with a .536 OPS.

Lile finished the season with 22 home runs and led the Nationals with four multi-home run games. He hit 13 home runs in 2025, including 47 minor league appearances.

The Nationals stole the most bases in MLB under new manager Blake Butera. Lile ranks in the 92nd percentile for sprint speed, according to Baseball Savant. Despite that, he was just fifth on the team with 15 stolen bases and second with seven times he’s been caught stealing.

Lile will be one of the few locks in the 2027 Opening Day starting lineup as the team builds its roster to compete. The future of the outfield looks promising with Lile pairing with James Wood in right field and Jacob Young or Dylan Crews in center field.

Lile was the youngest National to appear in 100 games this season, leading the team with 160 appearances. The 2026 season proved that Lile can be an all-around player and survive an MLB workload.

The 23-year-old will now go into the 2027 season trying to match his rookie-season offense with last season's defense.
