One Washington National infielder who was traded ahead of the deadline is in line to make his 2026 playoff debut
The Washington Nationals have already closed the book on their 2026 regular season after winning four of the final five games to close eight games under .500, the franchise's best record since winning the World Series in 2019. While president of baseball operations Paul Toboni and the front office will look to shift attention to offseason plans amid questions surrounding the both looming CBA and the upcoming 2027 season, one former National is in line to make his first appearance in the postseason since 2023.
The Red Sox are replacing left fielder Roman Anthony, who suffered a hand injury, with infielder Curtis Mead on the playoff roster, paving the way for his first MLB appearance since his debut with the Red Sox. Mead was reportedly in the mix alongside Anthony Siegler and Romy Gonzalez.
Mead exited the game after just one at bat after he suffered a hand injury back on July 27 that derailed the rest of his 2026 regular season. A potential playoff appearance would mark his first since his first of three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The irony with Mead's injury is that he arrived in Boston via trade with Washington after the Nationals acquired left handed pitcher Connelly Early, who was sidelined for nearly a month prior with elbow discomfort that derailed the overwhelming majority of his 2026 season.
Early was able to make his Nationals debut where he tossed three strikeouts and allowed one hit over three innings, an encouraging sign in the expected limited performance. The appearance also eased any concerns regarding his return from injury ahead of the offseason, adding one less storyline for Toboni and the Nationals' executives to address in the months ahead.
During his lone season in Washington, Mead posted a 1.8 WAR, 17 home runs and 48 RBIs while hitting .254 -- all new career bests. Mead's stint with the organization began after the Nationals acquired him from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for catching prospect Boston Smith. While the acquisition gave the Nationals another relative unknown piece along the 40-man roster, the decision to trade him prior to the deadline gave the front office a chance to sell high with the postseason increasingly out of the picture.
Mead will now look to join a Red Sox team climbing out of an early hole after falling, 9-0, in game one against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Mead is not in the lineup for game two following the announcement.
