Washington Nationals first baseman Luis García Jr earned his first career Player of the Week award
After a monster week, Washington Nationals first baseman Luis García Jr. was honored by the MLB on Monday afternoon ahead of the series opener against the Boston Red Sox.
Luis García Jr. was named the National League Player of the Week after one of the few bright spots during what proved to be a brutal week for the Nationals.
García Jr., 26, went 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles, six home runs, nine RBIs, three walks and eight runs scored in six games from June 22-28.
This marks the first career Player of the Week honor for Garcia along with the third weekly award by a National this season after James Wood drew the same award back on April 7 one week after Nasim Nunez won Play of the Week.
His six home runs through the week made him just the fourth player since 2022 across all of baseball to accomplish the feat after García led the National League in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and home runs.
After closing last week with an 0-for-4 performance against the Tampa Bay Rays, García went on to record at least one hit in five of the next six games including one home run in each of the final three games against the Philadelphia Phillies. The lone game he did not record a hit was when he pinch hit for Nunez in the seventh inning of series opening loss against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
García started the final two games of the series against the Orioles, a move that proved to be critical to the Nationals' pulling out the final two games after he went a combined 7-for-10 with three home runs, two doubles and six RBIs during that span.
His two home runs in Sunday's win marked his second multi-home run game in June, third of the season and sixth in his career.
On the season heading into Monday's series in Fenway Park, García owned a slash line of .279/.307/.543 while appearing in all but seven of the Nationals' 86 games through the 2026 season.
Through June, García has blasted notched 25 RBIs with 24 hits to 12 strikeouts, enough to enter Monday's road series hitting .304 during that span. Nunez also owns a 1.143 OPS and .797 slugging along with six multi-hit games through the month, while 11 of his 16 home runs this season have come during that span.
