Taking a look at the latest player review with infielder Jorbit Vivas navigating through an up-and-down 2026 season with the Washington Nationals
While much of the attention of Washington Nationals' fans — both in terms of reflection on last year and projection for next year — will go towards the stars. But with the season in the rearview mirror, it’s also important to evaluate the guys closer to the margins, the role players who help make the team tick.
2026: How did it go?
Over the course of the 2026 season, Vivas played in 121 games for Washington. In those outings, he slashed .238/.331/.332 and had 19 extra base hits, including three home runs.
Looking at the slash line, it’s no secret: Vivas is not exactly a high-impact player at the plate. The 25-year-old infielder didn’t exactly make his presence known at the dish.
He did contribute in other ways, though. According to Baseball Savant, Vivas graded out as above average both in terms of base running and defense, both assets for a team that hopes to be a playoff contender sooner rather than later.
To be specific, Vivas was excellent at second base. He racked up five outs above average there, which any team will certainly take from an up-the-middle defender.
To sum it up in a few words, Vivas is not a star, nor even necessarily a starting-caliber player on a good team, but he has the tools to play a role in Washington.
But… what is his role in 2027?
Vivas’ projection is pretty simple, given his production or lack thereof) at the plate and the things he does well.
Good teams need guys who can do the small things that elevate a team from good to great. They need defensive substitutions, utility guys given Vivas doesn’t just play second, pinch runners and players who can be at least serviceable at the plate.
Vivas checks a lot of those boxes. For that reason alone, he will likely play some role for Washington going forward.
Plus, it’s worth noting that Vivas is still young. At 25, he has plenty of room to grow into a larger role than he might be capable of right now.
Washington probably shouldn’t count on a star leap from Vivas, but it’s also certainly not to late for him to grow from a guy who can lift the team in small ways to a future quality starter.
