Marte, who is putting up career-worst numbers at the plate, has been limited to just two appearances since the All-Star break.
The New York Mets placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list due to migraines on Thursday, the team's transaction log shows. MLB.com beat writer Anthony DiComo was among those to initially report the move.
Marte was most recently scratched from the Mets' lineup against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The two-time All-Star hasn't played since July 16 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts and a stolen base.
Mark Canha has moved from left field to right field in Marte's absence, while Tommy Pham has moved from designated hitter to left field.
Marte is eligible to return to the active roster on July 27.
Before he started to deal with migraines, Marte was hitting .254 with a .640 OPS – both career-lows for the Dominican-born 34-year-old. Marte has five home runs, 28 RBI, 24 stolen bases and a -0.5 WAR through 84 games in 2023.
Marte spent eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, hitting .287 with 108 home runs, 420 RBI, 239 stolen bases and a .793 OPS in that time.
The Pirates traded Marte to the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the 2020 season, only for the Diamondbacks to turn around and flip him to the Miami Marlins at that year's trade deadline. The Marlins dealt Marte to the Oakland Athletics just before the 2021 trade deadline.
Marte signed a four-year, $78 million contract with the Mets last offseason. He was named an All-Star in his first season with New York, putting up a .292 batting average, 16 home runs, 63 RBI, 18 stolen bases and an .814 OPS.
More than halfway through his second campaign as a Met, Marte has not been able to match those numbers, all while his team fell off around him.
New York went 101-61 in 2022, but sits at 45-50 so far in 2023, including a 36-44 record when Marte starts.
The Mets have a chance to sweep the White Sox on Thursday, thus extending their much-needed winning streak to four games, but are currently down 2-0 in the fifth inning.
