The new New York Mets third baseman had a cheeky response to fans' boos, agreeing with them in sorts.

New New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette is only three games into his tenure with his new franchise. It took that long, and until the seventh inning of that third contest, for Bichette to get booed at home by fans at Citi Field. Bichette had a rather cheeky response to the crowd, agreeing with them in essence, and joking that he was surprised it hadn’t happened sooner. It was an ugly outing for the hot corner in the Mets’ 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates that stretched into 10 innings, and it built on a suboptimal body of work in his time in New York. Bichette is 1-for-14 in his first three games with eight strikeouts, which is rather jarring given his usual slugger prowess.

Bichette slashed .311/,357/.483 with a 129 OPS+, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI last season with the Toronto Blue Jays and carried an impressive 14.5 percent strikeout rate. It certainly doesn’t match the expected output of a three-year, $126 million deal. But it’s simply only been three games, and three in which Bichette has had to play a completely different position in the majors.

Here is the full story from Blue Jays Roundtable writer Bob McCullough on Bichette’s self-aware response to his early turmoil.

Bichette was the Blue Jays’ shortstop last season, and in all seven seasons in his tenure with Toronto. So, perhaps a new position has forced a split of mental energy that hasn’t found its rhythm yet. New York, and particularly the fanbase, hope that happens sooner rather than later into his 2026 MLB campaign.
