The Red Sox placed their ace on the 15-day IL, adding to a rough start that includes a managerial firing.

The Boston Red Sox are dealing with incredible organization turnover right now after the shocking firing of manager Alex Cora and six other members of their staff, and as interim manager Chad Tracy gets acclimated, he’s already dealing with some injury news. The Red Sox placed lefty Garrett Crochet on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder, capping a brutal stretch for Boston with a last-place record in the AL East, the firing of Cora, and now a sidelined ace.

It’s still early, but with a 12-18 record, the Red Sox are in a bit of crisis mode with a thinning rotation and no clear answer moving forward. Crochet’s IL stint was announced before the team plays the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon. In a corresponding move, Boston recalled utility man Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester. But there’s been no replacement named for Friday’s rotation turn in place of Crochet, who most recently threw six shutout innings versus the Baltimore Orioles, and didn’t alert of any health issues postgame.

Here is the full story from Red Sox Roundtable writer Zach Coe on the surprising update and the state of concern toward growing injuries on the roster.

Crochet hadn’t exactly been off to a stellar start in his second season with the franchise, carrying a 6.30 ERA through his first six starts. The two-time All-Star allowed a career-worst 10 earned runs against the Minnesota Twins just two weeks ago. He’ll now head to the IL alongside starter Sonny Gray, who has a hamstring, further depleting the rotation for the team.

It’ll be a real test on Tracy and the Red Sox to traverse the rotation with lacking depth as two starters are on IL, and with no clear solution for Friday’s turn.
