The former No. 1 pick joins a Guardians lineup built around youth as Cleveland chases a third straight AL Central title.
The Cleveland Guardians are calling up their most anticipated prospect since Francisco Lindor debuted in 2015, former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana, as the team looks to three-peat and capture the AL Central title. It wasn’t so much a question of it, but when the prospect would be promoted, after showing strong development and an opportunity to make an impact. The 23-year-old slashed .287/.422/.511 with two homers, 10 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 24 games for Triple-A Columbus. The lefty hitter also has shown strong plate discipline with 21 walks to 25 strikeouts at the Triple-A level.
Bazzana will now slide into the second baseman role in a full-time capacity, replacing the platoon of rookie Juan Brito and utilityman Daniel Schneemann. It’s a lineup headlined by young talent as Bazzana’s addition makes it four position players who are 24 or younger: rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter, shortstop Brayan Rocchio, left fielder Angel Martinez and now Bazzana. The Guardians currently rank 19th in baseball with 118 runs, matching division leaders Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners. It marks a major jump from last season when Cleveland ranked 28th in the league in runs scored. With Bazzana ascending into the lineup, the hope is that the top of the order for the Guardians is strengthened long term.
Here is the full story from Guardians Roundtable writer Tommy Wild on the franchise calling up their top ranked prospect.
Bazzana becomes the 10th first rounder from the splash 2024 draft class to reach the MLB, showing one of the deeper classes in recent years. The hope is that he’ll immediately make an impact. There was thought that the team could have kept him in the minors to preclude him from being eligible for a fourth season of arbitration. However, they’re looking at the here-and-now, and are promoting him up ahead of the second game of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. By dropping the first game of the series to the Rays, they sit a half game behind the Detroit Tigers in first place at 15-15.
