The Mets' injury woes deepen as key center fielder Luis Robert Jr. hits the IL, compounding position struggles and competitive woes.
There appears to be only a dim light at the end of the tunnel for the New York Mets, if one at all.
After a historic 12-game losing streak, the club's longest since 2002, back-to-back wins helped New York show signs of life. However, since then, they've dropped five of their last six.
Even with a winnable two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels (12-20) on the way, things don't look to be lightening up for the Mets who just lost another key contributor to be placed on IL.
For more on the Mets' most recent loss, a 5-4 defeat to the Washington Nationals, here's the postgame story from Mets Roundtable writer Bob McCullough.
Already without Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco and Jared Young, the Mets will now be without center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who was added to the IL (10-day). The appointment is retroactive to April 27.
Robert joined the Mets in January via a trade with the Chicago White Sox. He was quick on the scene his rookie year, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting and had a breakout 2023 season with 38 home runs hit as well as 80 RBIs.
The Mets continue to lose fire power and fielding with position contributors falling out of the lineup due to injuries. It's literal injury to added insult in a season that has not gotten off to the start that many had hoped in the Big Apple.
The Mets are now 10-21 with their next game Friday against the Angels coming with a depleting roster and the dark cloud of 57-straight losses when trailing in the ninth inning looming over them.
