Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman has opened the 2026 season strong.

There have not been many bright spots for the Baltimore Orioles through the first month of the 2026 season, but one undeniable positive has been the resurgence of Adley Rutschman.

The 28-year-old catcher has returned to form at the plate, entering Tuesday with a .289 batting average, .333 on-base percentage, .860 OPS, four home runs and 17 RBIs through 20 games.

Even with Rutschman producing, the Orioles have struggled to live up to expectations. After a busy offseason spent retooling the roster, Craig Albernaz's group has struggled to stay over .500 and they hit a new low this past weekend.

They were swept in four games by the New York Yankees over the weekend, allowing 39 total runs in the series. Even Rutschman’s strong start has not been enough to change the team’s trajectory.

However, during Monday’s loss to New York, Rutschman reached a major personal milestone, collecting the 500th hit of his MLB career. The Orioles acknowledged the achievement shortly after it happened. “500 hits & counting for Adley Rutschman! 👏,” the team wrote on X.

This moment has been a long time coming for Rutschman, who is now in his fifth MLB season and has experienced an up-and-down career to this point. Early on, he lived up to the expectations of being a No. 1 overall pick, becoming an American League MVP finalist, a two-time All Star and a Silver Slugger winner within his first few seasons.

But injuries derailed his 2025 campaign, and entering this year, his long-term role with the organization appeared uncertain, especially after the Orioles extended young catcher Samuel Basallo to eight-year contract instead of him.

Rutschman’s performance in 2026, though, has made it clear he remains the club’s primary option behind the plate. The only concern at this point is durability. Even this season, he spent time on the injured list due to left ankle inflammation, a reminder of how important staying healthy will be for him moving forward.

If anyone can help turn the Orioles season around, it is Rutschman. His leadership, offensive production and ability to handle the pitching staff remain important to Baltimore’s hopes of climbing out of their early-season hole. Baltimore currently owns a 15-20 record, sitting in fourth place in the AL Central.

The Orioles will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Tuesday when they open a series on the road against the Miami Marlins.
