The Orioles got what they needed from the 27-year-old.
On Monday, the Baltimore Orioles did not look like the same team that got swept by the New York Yankees at the beginning of May. They beat the Yankees 3-2 this time, largely thanks to starting pitcher Brandon Young.
The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits over 5.1 innings to go with five strikeouts and three walks. The only time New York scored on him was Ben Rice's two-run homer in the third.
Young also allowed a leadoff double to Aaron Judge in the sixth, who moved to third on a Cody Bellinger groundout. However, southpaw reliever Dietrich Enns then came in and retired the next two hitters, leaving the three-time AL MVP on base.
Baltimore's bullpen pitched a shutout the rest of the way, and Orioles designated hitter Coby Mayo launched a three-run homer to left in the seventh, which ended up being the game-winning hit.
The Orioles are now third place in the AL East at 19-23, while the Yankees are second at 26-16.
Brandon Young Bails Orioles Out Amid Injuries
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brandon Young (63). © Mitch Stringer-Imagn ImagesBaltimore needed quality innings from Young on Monday, as its pitching staff is shorthanded. Fellow starters Trevor Rogers (illness), Dean Kremer (quadriceps), and Cade Povich (elbow) are all on the 15-day injured list, as well as closer Ryan Helsley (elbow), per MLB.com.
If Young had gotten shelled, it would've made a difficult situation even harder given the Orioles' current lack of depth. Luckily for them, the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder was up to the task against one of the best lineups in baseball.
New York is third in MLB with a .771 OPS, first with 64 homers, and second with 206 RBIs. But Young neutralized the offense to the point that Baltimore stayed in the game despite getting no-hit into the seventh inning by starting pitcher Ryan Weathers.
This game was a departure from the last Yankees-Orioles series, as the Yankees won the four contests by a combined score of 39-10 and scored at least seven runs in each matchup. Baltimore is unlikely to beat New York in a high-scoring affair, as it ranks 20th in baseball with a .697 OPS. That's why quality starting pitching is a better bet for the squad in this series.
Meanwhile, Young is now 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA over five starts this season. He's tossed at least five innings with three or fewer earned runs in four of those outings.
Up next for the Orioles are two more home games against the Yankees before a road trip to face the Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays. Their starting pitcher is undecided for Tuesday's matchup against New York, which starts at 6:35 p.m. ET.
