Basallo shared a promising update.

Baltimore Orioles top prospect Samuel Basallo exited Thursday's spring training game against the Detroit Tigers with an apparent injury. On Friday, however, Basallo provided an encouraging update. According to Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun, Basallo was in "good spirits" on Friday. While he officially left the game with abdominal discomfort, Basallo reportedly believes it was just cramping and thinks he could return as soon as the weekend, per Weyrich.

The Orioles' ultimately earned a 6-5 win over the Tigers on Thursday. The last thing they were thinking about was the outcome of a spring training matchup, though. Attention has shifted to Basallo's status, and it appears the catcher is going to be alright.

While Basallo reportedly believes he could play this weekend, the O's are going to be cautious. There is no reason to rush him back in spring training. Baltimore knows how talented Basallo is, and the catcher doesn't have to prove anything this spring.

With all of that being said, Basallo's comments are encouraging. The fact that he wants to return sooner rather than later is a tremendous sign.

Samuel Basallo Avoids Serious Injury

Basallo, 21, is the No. 8 overall prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com. The left-handed hitter is known for his power. However, he projects to be an all-around quality hitter at the big league level.

Defensively, Basallo features a strong throwing arm. His overall defense is still improving, though. Adley Rutschman is on the roster as well, so Basallo may see time at designated hitter this season.

Basallo's bat is what stands out about his game. The Orioles believe he can become a star in MLB.

He made his big league debut in 2025. Basallo struggled at the plate, but he also appeared in only 31 games. He ended up recording a .165/.229/.330 slash line across 118 plate appearances. He also hit four home runs and six doubles.

Basallo is expected to have a spot on the Orioles' 2026 Opening Day roster. He will likely be the starting DH and backup catcher, giving Rutschman days off whenever he needs them. It would not be surprising to see Basallo make a serious run for the American League Rookie of the Year Award as well.

As far as his injury status is concerned, the team will provide updates as they are made available.  The Orioles' next spring training contest is scheduled for 1:05 PM EST against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
