Baltimore Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish got more clarity on his injury setback.
Kyle Bradish’s 2026 MLB season has come to an end. Earlier this week, Bradish finally got some more clarity on the exact injury setback he is dealing with.
The Baltimore Orioles right-hander has been diagnosed with a sports hernia. “Orioles’ Kyle Bradish has a sports hernia and surgery is on the table, manager Craig Albernaz announced,” reported Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun. As a result, Bradish is now weighing his next steps to see if surgery is necessary.
Bradish first landed on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with lower abdominal discomfort. He was sent there after a short outing in Toronto against the Blue Jays where he struggled and allowed eight hits and five runs in just three innings of work.
The Orioles had recalled reliever Yaramil Hiraldo from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.
The injury surfaced after Sunday's 8-1 loss against the Blue Jays. Albernaz revealed that Bradish had been pitching through the discomfort for quite some time now to help the Orioles push for the final American League wild card spot.
The timing is tough for Kyle Bradish and the club. He has now finished the year 7-14 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.458 WHIP over 29 starts. His numbers had dipped late, however, possibly due to pitching through the injury. Across his final seven outings, he posted a 5.29 ERA as his command slipped.
This was Bradish’s first full season back from Tommy John surgery in June 2024. He threw 155 innings this year after logging just 32 in 2025. That heavy jump in workload appeared to catch up with him.
His exit also opens a hole in the rotation. Albernaz has left the fifth starter’s spot unsettled for now. Left-hander Cade Povich is one internal option to absorb those innings down the stretch.
The blow also thins an already shorthanded roster. Baltimore was stretched on the infield with Blaze Alexander sidelined before Jackson Holliday landed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation. To fill the opening, the club called up infielder Jose Barrero from Triple-A Norfolk. He hit .202 with 23 home runs there this season.
Baltimore enters Thursday sitting just 2.5 games back in the wild card race with under two weeks to play. For now, Bradish can only wait and heal. He remains under contract through 2031, so the Orioles will protect his long-term future first and he could be in for a lengthy offseason of recovery heading into 2027.
