Baltimore Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday has landed on the 10-day IL.
The Baltimore Orioles have lost another infielder at the worst possible time. Second baseman Jackson Holliday has been placed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation. José Barrero was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.
The decision comes as Baltimore continues to fight and stay alive in the American League wild card race. Entering Thursday’s slate of games, they sit just 2.5 games back of a playoff spot.
The Orioles made the move official on Wednesday. Holliday is eligible to return on September 25, yet it is unclear if he will be ready to return by then. His IL stint is retroactive to Tuesday.
Manager Craig Albernaz has admitted the injury had been lingering and that Holliday had been banged up recently.
This also marks his second IL trip of 2026. He opened the year sidelined after right hamate surgery.The left wrist issue almost certainly traces back to the right hamate fracture Holliday suffered in February that required surgery. Holliday likely had been overcompensating.
Holliday was not the only member of the Orioles to suffer an injury setback this Wednesday. On the same day, the team confirmed that starting pitcher Kyle Bradish has been diagnosed with a sports hernia. Surgery remains on the table. However, Albernaz said the club is still weighing every option.
Losing Holliday is a loss for the lineup even though Holliday has struggled this year. Across 98 games, Holliday is hitting .229 with a .300 on-base percentage and .640 OPS. He has added seven home runs, 12 doubles and 30 RBIs.
For now, Jeremiah Jackson will step in at second base. He has responded well, homering in each of Baltimore’s last two wins over the New York Mets. More help could be coming eventually. Utility infielder Blaze Alexander has resumed baseball activities, which could add needed depth down the stretch. Barrero should also see an increase in playing time.
Holliday's future with the Orioles is certainly in question regardless of whether he returns for the final few games. He was already floated as a potential trade candidate at this past deadline but ultimately stayed put.
Three seasons in, the sample size is now large enough to raise concerns about whether Holliday will ever consistently perform at the level expected of a former first overall pick. This offseason the Orioles will have a decision to make about his long-term role within the organization and if he will be on the roster for Opening Day 2027.
